'Do we get copyright of our wedding photos?' It is one of the questions I get asked most often when I meet up with couples. A quick look at many of the hundreds of wedding photographer websites will find a large proportion offering 'copyright free images'. It would be easy to assume that it is indeed the case that you get copyright of your images, right?
Well, no. Let me explain...any professional photographer will never EVER hand over copyright free images. The UK designs and Patents Act 1988 states that where a photograph is taken and an image is created, the photographer owns the copyright. Where you see the words 'copyright free', it should trigger a big warning sign in your mind. Is that photographer really a full time professional or are they an amateur earning a bit of money on the side of another job?
A professional will always retain copyright. What they also will do is (in my case within ALL my package prices) is give you a license for different uses, for example, printing copies and putting images on social media.
There is no need to have copyright, as the license I provide for your personal use allows printing, Facebook and Twitter uploading or creating your own photo albums.
Things to remember -
- The photographer owns the copyright by default.
- No professional photographer will ever give copyright free images. If they do, alarm bells should be ringing.
- If you would like changes to any of your images, don't try it yourself. Ask me, I will be happy to help!
I hope this little guide goes some way to help clear up the confusion and misinformation around who has copyright of images and importantly, why.
